I'm looking forward to seeing this project completed! not direct any heat at the bezel, only at the head of the axe from underneath where the bezel will be. My suggestion would be to heat the axe head only, i.e. Be sure to use the fine silver (.999) bezel wire, it is much easier to "push." You may also run into problems soldering the bezel, which is quite thin metal and very small, to the body of the axe, which is humongous in comparison. Getting the bezel to be exactly the right size when it is soldered together may take a little practice. I'm talking about just carrying it around and showing it off - nevermind using it! My suggestions to you are, use a harder stone, something like Chrysophrase if you want a green color, and create some kind of raised area around the bezel setting so that the surface of the stone is below the edge of the raised area. #2) Malachite is relatively soft on the Mohs scale (I think it is a 5) and the surface of your stone, in the bezel, will get scratched all to hell, especially in a battle axe.

Malachite is a lot easier to break while bezel setting then other stones that you could use. #1) You said you had never bezel set a stone before. I would suggest a different stone than Malachite for a couple reasons. I remember seeing your drawing of this somewhere before-I really can't wait to see it made! Thanks for posting the WIP up here for us to see! I plan to start the blade billets this weekend. The four-piece construction design is partially due to the limited "mouth" of my forge. The lower portion of the handle isn't designed yet, but I imagine it to be of hardwood with a large counter-weight on the end to offset the weight of the blades. The plan for that i to inset a chunk of malachite in a silver bezel (which I've never done before).

The entire thing will be of damascus, with the exception of the diamond shaped inset in the middle of the "X". I figured by "throwing the guantlet" here in the forum I'd get off my butt and actually start building it.īelow is the design for the blades and top of the handle. I kept putting it off for smaller projects. Sort of a motivation through cyber peer pressure if you will. So, I learned on the Ealdric project with The Mad Dwarf guys that I am more motivated to complete a project if the forum knows about it.
